    Online business models
       September 4th, 2006

Earning online is great, but not quite stable way to feel you safe. Diversification is the key that in my opinion should help online entrepreneurs to protect themselves from miscellaneous kinds of online instability.

What is diversification? Let us check.

Diversification is the investment strategy of putting your money into a number of different investments in order to reduce overall Investment Risk. The goal is that losses in one or more investments may be offset by gains in others.

If you run a website as a simple way to diversify your online business (and as a result, to make it more stable) is to start a few more websites. It will take more efforts to maintain a few websites compared to one; you will be unable to devote all your time to one resource, but as a reward you will be less dependent on that sole revenue source. And you can always hire some help.

A few websites to replace one is a simple way to diversify your business and reduce the risks. I think a better way is to employ a few online business models – you still make your living online, but use various business models. Below comes the list of online business models. Click on every model to read an extended description and see samples.

I recommend you bookmaking the list and referring to it occasionally when you are thinking about starting new online projects or about diversification. It helps you to understand the alternate ways you have to earn on the Internet.

Summary: The purpose of this blog is to show ways (the more the better) an average person have to get part or full time income online. In this post you find listed all business models suitable for online business nicely described and supported with samples.

You are not likely to become next Amazon or eBay (but who knows), but with this knowledge of business models – how these companies make money – you can think of your venture that could get its niche online.

Staff training: how you do it?
       September 1st, 2006

There comes a day and you think it is time to hire extra help. You do not cope with all your websites and you need some time to think about new directions of your current projects, to consider new opportunities and new websites to start.

So, you look for the outside help. I will describe my way – I realize that the quality of help needed depends on the type, amount, scale of the projects you run.

I outsource all my work at the moment – I do not rent an office and do not manage any in-house staff.

When I need a new developer I refer to ‘20 good questions to ask’ checklist and it works for me in an efficient way to find what I need. I guess my projects are quite simple – a mediocre developer (PHP, HTML, CSS) easily handles my tasks.

When it comes to copywriter/ blogger, forum moderator or search marketer to promote a website I have, as a rule, to start from zero explaining university graduates and students what I mean and need. Yes, they all are familiar with forums and blogs, but as consumers, not makers of the product. So, I have developed a sort of ‘Training kit’ that I periodically revise. I include links to the articles and posts that are, from my point of view, best published on the subject and that will help the staff to fully grasp what I need from them.

Here comes the selection of the links I send to any person I hire to help me with running websites:

Summary: I do not think that it fits everyone’s needs, but it should help you as well to fill in some gaps (I hope so) – when I revise the training kit I re-read the articles myself and as a rule discover some missing points. And you can select just those links that are applicable in your case and send them to your helpers.

It is difficult for me to state how effective the training kit for my hired help, but I observe the progress and am quite satisfied with what I see.

I would be glad if you share your own way to train staff.

    AOL search data
       August 31st, 2006

Recently there was much online hype with AOL making public its search data for the period of three months. AOL tried to correct this mistake by withdrawing the data asap, but search marketers were fast to grasp the value of the information and make it available online – you can download the AOL search data here. In fact I have seen free and useful online tools based on this data. See a sample here.

No doubt, the information is a great keyword list for search marketers – 100% authentic and 100% free. And remember that AOL uses Google search results. So, in fact we wee granted Google search results for the period of three months.

One of the conclusions I particularly find useful is the analysis of click rate depending on your position in a search engine:

    Total Searches:9,038,794
    Total Clicks: 4,926,623

    Click Rank1: 2,075,765
    Click Rank2: 586,100 = 3.5x less
    Click Rank3: 418,643 = 4.9x less
    Click Rank4: 298,532 = 6.9x less
    Click Rank5: 242,169 = 8.5x less
    Click Rank6: 199,541 = 10.4x less
    Click Rank7: 168,080 = 12.3x less
    Click Rank8: 148,489 = 14.0x less
    Click Rank9: 140,356 = 14.8x less
    Click Rank10: 147,551 = 14.1x less

Summary: While reading articles, forum and blog posts on AOL search data release I got astonished at how quick online marketers were to react. Yes, I was more struck with this instantaneous reaction than with AOL blunder and value of the available search data. It took no more than a few days to dissect and analyze that amount of the data, to develop tools and post them online.

    Some marketers have published
entire series of their analysis results and conclusions (check the archive).
