Feed? What’s that?

Generally speaking, feeds are a way of sharing online content. If you want to make some material from your website available for publishing on some other web-page you give that site a feed. So to cut the long story short, it is a code that allows that site to post your blog entries or articles. There are different types of feeds – XML, RSS, Atom etc. But, in fact, they are just different ways of accessing the same feed.

Here, at Dropshiparea.com, we try to follow all the latest trends in both affiliate marketing and business solutions. To tell you the truth, until recently, we never considered feeds as a valuable source of content, but we tried and realized that it is a working scheme of data exchange between us and our worthy dropship suppliers

Sydney Johnston, the Internet expert says: “The great thing about a feed is everybody wins.” How could that be? Very simple – the author of the article gets readers, the readers learn something new and the online seller gets an endless source of high-quality content.

Can Feeds help an Online Business?

Yes, they can, and in various ways:

With the help of feeds you can deceive spam filters. Feeds are optional. If a user wants to get a feed, he/she will subscribe to it, if not – unsubscribe. No more wars for readers’ inboxes.

Feed are a source of free content. How to make your site stand out in a crowd? Fill it with worthy content. For your business it can be very useful – you can write and thus make your clients read about the products you are selling. You have to make sure that your feeds are up-to-date. In this case they can become a good reason for clients to come back to your page.

Search engine ranking improvement. Search engines are keep on fresh and constantly updated content, so feeds are exactly what you want. You can kill two birds with one stone – fill your page with interesting entries and improve your search rankings.

If you have Affiliate Marketing schemes feeds can be a great asset to you. In this very respect they are very similar to banners but they don’t look commerce.

Increase the traffic. If other sites pick up your feeds – it is just like free advertising for you. Some of the traffic from those sites is automatically redirected to yours.

If you want to find feeds it is very easy to do. There are search engines for feeds only (Plazoo.com, Feedster.com).

Johnston adds:

“The future of the internet for entrepreneurs is feeds. If people don’t master them, they’re going to get left behind, period.”

You want to increase your traffic? I do not doubt that.

OK, as the title says get a cheap, I would say, the cheapest copywriter you can find. Not the best, not a good copywriter, but the cheapest one – a college student, an overseas freelancer, other kind of ideas go here.

I have got this idea about a year back. Recently I have read a story of a webmaster who has increased his AdSense earnings from $10.00 to $800.00 per week – and that reminded me of that idea. It is not new and to tell the truth a boring (but efficient) technique. I have practiced it for some time, but it was not much fun and I dropped it. Now I think that it is worth hiring someone to do this job as it does not attract me, but the technique works.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO DOUBLING (TRIPLING…) ORGANIC TRAFFIC

1. Conduct a proper keyword analysis – that is the core of the technique. You can certainly use this or this keyword research tools to start with. But we talk about a proper keyword research that will provide you with reliable information about number of searches and competitors (demand/ supply), will help you to make a list of misspellings, etc. WordTracker is a nice tool in this case.

2. Hire a local college student or an overseas freelancer. The price – all that matters. You need the cheapest human (not automatic) content generator.

3. Supply him with the list of keywords you have got as a result of your deep keyword research.

4. Instruct that person: you need to write articles focused around each of the keyword phrase. The articles should be 100% unique (copyscape tool will control you), 300-400 words. You should mention the article title in the text, use references to your other articles with proper anchor text, etc…

5. Design a landing page properly optimized (yes, it is a PPC term applicable for this organic optimization technique). The layout to the left is quite good:

6. Publish those articles after making the required changes (on-page optimization) and interlinking them into the website structure.

7. Wait for a few months for any effect (= traffic increase).

Summary: I should mention that this technique is not applicable to all websites (unfortunately). It works fine with good and established websites that are online for a couple of years.

Will it (‘artificial content’) damage the image of your website? I do not think so. You can keep running the website the way you do it now adding valuable content, services and tools.

Website content comes in a few forms: text, video, audio, images, graphics, software, etc. Depending on the website type this or that content type is domineering.

The internet primarily fulfills an informational function. I guess the expression ‘Content is king‘ originates from that fact (‘uniqueness‘ is also a boring cliche of high quality content). Everyone is bored with this saying, but a discussion of what really constitutes high quality content shows that ideas and opinions on this issue are different.

I find these descriptions more accurate and fresh to my ear:

- smart
- useful
- relevant
- credible

The way of content presentation on the web is also important. People do not read – they scan headlines and text bodies. So your task is to get their attention. And it is not so easy when everyone is short of time and with so many options of info sources.

Also recent changes of web content are evident and they are likely to progress:

Denying there have been some major change of direction of the web in general in the last year or two is just burying one’s head in the sand. And that change is mostly in the form of new content types (maps, videos, pics, garbage) that is hard to monetize (if not impossible) through contextual text ads.

Really:
written content = contextual text ads
videos =? ads
maps =? ads
applications =? ads

The web is going through the same transitions as the industrial world, the goal here is to adapt and anticipate, not live on our accomplishments. Sure, huge textual content sites will be around for a while and will have their reason for living, but don’t forget that in the web time frame, everything moves quicker. Change might hit us faster than expected.

Summary: When I contemplate on content I think if it is a long play for independent web publishers. More companies come to the web, they take niches that nobody found interesting a year back. I do not think that it is too bad (it is too bad for independent website publishers only) – the users will get information products of a better quality.

I adore del.icio.us. It is a simple and brilliant service that saves a lot of time and it is free.

To tell the truth, I do not remember when I used Google or any other search engine for the last time – probably just to check ranking positions of my websites. In case I need information I can trust and find fast I go to del.icio.us and browse the website literally for hours discovering more and more fantastic resources, applications and services in miscellaneous industries.

Some facts from the history:

The website del.icio.us (pronounced as “delicious”) is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. The site came online in late 2003 and was founded by Joshua Schachter, co-maintainer of Memepool.

A non-hierarchical keyword categorization system is used on del.icio.us where users can tag each of their bookmarks with a number of freely chosen keywords (cf. folksonomy). A combined view of everyone’s bookmarks with a given tag is available; for instance, the URL “http://del.icio.us/tag/wiki” displays all of the most recent links tagged “wiki”. Its collective nature makes it possible to view bookmarks added by similar-minded users.

I recommend you checking these very useful resources to get more benefits from the website:

Several Habits of Wildly Successful del.icio.us Users

Absolutely Del.icio.us Tools Collection

del.icio.us is one website from the list of social websites. In my case it is the most useful. I can easily do without others from the list, but I explore del.icio.us daily.

Why do I prefer it to Google and other search engines? Because it returns much better results. For instance, if I browse by keywords I also pay attention to how many people bookmarked this page. If it shows a high number of people I am sure that it is a good and reliable source. And I am sure that it is not an artificial bookmarks – digg.com (just another popular social website) is regularly criticized for its not quite objective way to feature website users’ content and news).

Summary: Well, I do not think that 100% persons share my excitement about this service, but most do, otherwise Yahoo! would not bother buying this service on December 2005.

Most websites heavily rely on their content. Yes, e-commerce websites or image hosting or proxy websites can do without any content. But even these types of websites actively develop their content sections to get a greater visibility in the search engines to get more visitors.

It is admitted that the most valuable content is unique content:

Unique means being the only one of its kind

I will not call it unique content – when you write a post on any topic you rely on some other sources of information (sometimes you make a link to those sources, sometimes you think these are your ideas as you do not remember where those ideas originate from).

So, I think you agree that the content matters for any type of website.

Next question is where to get much of these valuable assets.

1. To develop your own? Yes, but you are not likely to produce as much as you would like or as your competitors who use other methods.

What are your other options?

2. You can steal content from others – not quite ethical, but widely practiced.

3. You can target your visitors and try to get user generated content – this is a great way to run a website. More on forums here.

4. You can use content from other websites that allow you to do it. It is not so valuable as your own mind product – readers are more interested to read it from the original source; search engine will neglect it as duplicate. But it is a nice addition to other website content you have – your own or forums.

Hidden Content Sources for Your Website lists good content sources that you should explore and decide if there is any sense to place any on your website:

Project Gutenberg
Archive.org
Creative Commons
Government Web Sites
Article Directories
Interviews
RSS Feeds
Facts & Statistics
Private Label Articles
Images
Quotes

Summary: Yes, content that no other websites have is the most valuable. But I suggest you to explore other types of content including duplicate – probably they will improve your website in some ways.

Or become your source of inspiration and give you some great ideas for conceptually developing your website.
