How to become a leader in your niche
       October 9th, 2006

I agree it is next to impossible for a small business owner or independent web publisher to be a leader in a big niche. How can you compete with large media holdings? For instance, I can’t imagine myself as an owner of a photo website competing with Flickr.com that belongs to Yahoo!

But if you follow this logic it means there is no place for small business in the online and offline world, but it is (luckily) not the fact of our life. I guess our primary task is to search for niches that are small enough for large companies and big enough for us.

Our next step is to attempt to become a leader of that ’small big’ niche. I have greatly enjoyed the reading of How to be a leader in your field and I would like to draw some parallels with online business. Just pay attention to what a leader does:

Every profession has leaders. In a formal sense, the elected officers of a professional society are the leaders of that profession. Because a profession is fundamentally about knowledge, however, the true leaders of a profession are the thought leaders: the individuals who synthesize the thinking of the profession’s members and articulate directions for the future. Sometimes a profession will elect its thought leaders to official positions. But often the thought leaders prefer to lead through writing and speaking, cutting-edge projects, conference organizing, and dialogue.

Leadership means both talking and listening, both vision and consensus. A leader builds a web of relationships within the profession and articulates the themes that are emerging in the thinking of the profession as a whole.

Pick an issue, an issue to research – another good advice. My websites miss this very thing. For instance, dropshiparea.com is a website on online business from the point of view of an individual trying to build a profitable network of websites, but at this time I do not work on a fairly specific issue in this industry. What is understood under an issue (followed by a list of tips how to discover that issue):

You need an issue that the profession as a whole is not really thinking about, but which is going to be the center of attention in five years.

The issue could be technical, strategic, managerial, policy-related, or all of the above. It could be a problem or an opportunity or both. It could be a new method or a whole new area of practice. It should be fairly specific, though, and should directly address the day-to-day work of people in some segment of the profession.

Summary: You should have at least one issue you are developing in this way. The idea is to help your niche to discover problems and opportunities. In this way you will get new knowledge and skills and build your network.

With time, you can switch to another issue if the previous one is covered or you spot new directions that are of greater interest to you personally.

This approach should help you to be among your niche leaders. The deep knowledge of one or two ‘hot’ niche issues will help you to compete with bigger companies.

    Starting a new online project
       October 9th, 2006

I own AmuseLine.com domain name for about 6-8 months now. It is time to add a website to the home page that is online all these months.

I have not started new websites for the last 10-12 months. Now I have (I hope) a much better understanding and knowledge of website publishing and industry in general compared to what I had a year back when I started my websites every month. As a result of this, I am very careful with starting new projects: competition, Sandbox, Trustbox, etc. I try to use some failure proof algorithm and cut my costs to minimum otherwise I will not be able to compete with other website publishers.

I am not sure if it works, but here is the sequence of my actions with starting new websites at this point in time. I make use of these articles and tools:

Marketing niche for a new website
    Website types
18 Questions Your CEO Forgot to Ask When Building Your Website – it is a great step by step guide what to do starting a new website
    Effective online marketing: what works?

Another approach to start new projects is based on six points:

    IDEA
    DESIGN
    CODE
    CONTENT
    MARKETING
    MONETIZATION

Summary: Yes, I think this is the way to start new websites nowadays. Keep your costs down, get to know the industry of your new website, network, use social websites, search for ideas that will help to position your website differently from your competitors (I guess it is the hardest part).

And also be prepared that will take months (if not years) to build an established website.

Online earnings dissected: what brings money?
       October 9th, 2006

Last weekend I have spent some time analyzing my online earnings of the recent months. I am not quite happy with the amounts earned, but I am satisfied that they are growing from month to month. Gradually, but they go higher and higher.

But the greatest disappointment of my analysis was the sources of my online income.

One of my rules is not to put all eggs into one basket. So, I run a few websites, a few websites in various industries, websites with forums, blogs, etc. and generate income from a few sources:

    -    Google AdSense/ Chitika/ AdBrite (CPC)
    -    ClickBank (digital products)
    -    ValueClick (CPM)
    -    Text-link-ads (text link sales) (aff)
    -    CJ/ AzoogleAds (CPA)
    -    Amazon affiliate stores
    -    Some indie programs

But the result of my research shows that I make 90% income off AdSense. All other sources are negligible. In fact, they are next to nothing. All my online projects are completely dependent on AdSense.

I posted a question on a few webmaster forums with the details of my research.

Those who joined the discussion shared the same stats:
    CPA does not,
    Amazon sucks,
    CPM rates decrease,
ClickBank – are they in business yet,
CPC is the only source of income worth mentioning.

Summary: I have an unpleasant feeling – Google AdSense can ban me at any time due to many reasons incl. the courtesy of the competitors. All attempts to diversify the online income have failed. And it looks that it is common with most other website owners.

Does it mean that affiliate marketing is currently 100% cost-per-click dependent (YPN/ AdSense)? It looks like it is. If you check the post on the largest website publisher money makers – they refer to Google AdSense. There are a few exceptions, but only a few.
