MySpace: generator of traffic and affiliate income
       October 31st, 2006

MySpace is a community with about 130,000,000 members. It is hard to say how many accounts are genuine and active and how many are bogus and inactive, but the web site lures thousands of Internet marketers hungry for traffic and affiliate sales. It is not a secret that it is hard to rank high in Google and people consider MySpace as a nice alternative to drive visitors to their offers and websites.

But reality is that it looks like MySpace as a marketing channel becomes less and less attractive:

Getting too many friends fast? Get banned
    Using mass messengers? Get banned
Any member reports you as a spammer? Get banned

Yes, you an start new accounts, but this is not the way to spend you time.

The most valuable asset of this social website – friends – you need as many friends as possible to convert a tiny portion of them into your website visitors or your affiliate offer customers. You can buy MySpace accounts (at the moment the market price is about $4.00 for an account with 1000 friends). But these friends are 99% auto generated with some trains or received via BadderAdder program or similar. Such accounts are of low marketing value.

And it is obvious that it is numbers game – you need thousands and thousands of ‘friends’ to achieve a decent result. MySpace members are reluctant to react to all those spam offers and deals they get.

The other side of the story are offers that webmasters try to promote using MySpace traffic.

CPA affiliate networks are against this sort of marketing (that is associated in their minds with spam). Sample: Maxbounty takes a Stance on Myspace Promotion

CPC networks share this point and if you abuse their TOS with sending too many clicks from MySpace traffic – you will get banned. Yahoo! Publisher Network statred to close accounts driving MySpace traffic months ago, Google AdSense was less strict, but now catches up.

What’s left? CPM? Need toooo many views to earn a considerable amount. Adult programs? Not allowed with MySpace (as well as other regulated industries offers). Some indie programs? Probably, this one still works.

There are other ways to make money with MySpace – but their days are numbered as MySpace owners do not want their project turned into some kind of linkdump or spam website.

Many webmasters complain that MySpace marketing is not so easy and profitable as it used to be back in 2004. I really admire those early adopters who discovered this marketing treasure room back in 2004.

I do not think that MySpace is useless for website owners now. It is simply not so easy. It takes time to add targeted friends, to build your profile and relations. It is likely to be a lasting source of traffic to your own web sites, but it will take much harder work that it used to be.

Summary: The question is if there is any ‘legitimate’ way to use MySpace as a marketing channel?

Yes, but it takes time and hard effort like building and promoting good quality websites. Target the demographics that fit nicely your web site topic. Add your friends gradually, join a group or start your own, build a brandable profile.

    How to advertise your blog
       October 11th, 2006

As blogs gain more popularity there are more and more people seeking the answer to this question: How to advertise your blog? I think a few years back this question was: how to promote a website. Blogs provide a more convenient way to keep your online property updated. As a result, they are more popular than traditional websites with no content management systems installed.

The answer to this popular query (I still talk about advertising your blog) is available if you take your time to browse this category. Also read these resources:

    Effective online marketing
How to Attract Links and Increase Web Traffic
Seth Godin: how to get traffic
Steve Pavlina: how build a high traffic blog
10 remarkably efficient ways to drive traffic

Also research these websites for more advertising tips:

    Performancing.com
    Problogger.net

Last, but not the least source of great tips is webmaster forums.

Summary: There is a rule accepted by most webmasters: to advertise your blog or website you need to make use of this formula:

Content x Links x Time. Webmasters (including myself) often forget TIME factor. Its importance grows with the saturation of the Internet.  Probably I should have placed in first place of the formula?

Two more points missing in this universally accepted formula are:

    -    Industry. Try to start websites in music and telecommunications industries and feel the difference: in traffic, monetization, etc.
    -    Experience. If you are new to building and promoting blogs be careful, do not expect it to become your full time income overnight. I have wasted much money and hours of fruitless tests before this activity started to be profitable.

So, my modified formula of successfully promoting a blog looks like this:

    Time x Content x Links x Industry x Experience

And I assure you that there are no magical tricks besides the ones mentioned in these post. Research the links, make your notes and save your time – stop searching for more.

Traffic tips: hunger for more visitors
       September 25th, 2006

I never stop looking for the ways to increase traffic to websites. It is a must if you want to make your living online. Yes, you can draw traffic to your website with your content ONLY, but keeping in mind the level of competition it is hard indeed.

As a rule, the new posts and articles with the tips on increasing traffic are not some sort of a revelation – they list standard traffic generation ways

But if this type of posts comes from online entrepreneurs with the established name I always know there are some new tips – you are likely to know and practice most mentioned techniques, but you should read between the lines then you get updated on all recent trends in this field. You should apply these tiny pieces of new methods while trying to increase traffic (or when they talk about other aspects related to online business) to your website make these websites leaders in their industry.

One of the posts of this type that I explore at the moment is from Rand Fishkin – 21 Tactics to Increase Blog Traffic

I am particularly interested in the below (when I apply the mentioned steps to this very blog):

Launch Without Comments (and Add Them Later)
There’s something sad about a blog with 0 comments on every post. It feels dead, empty and unpopular. Luckily, there’s an easy solution – don’t offer the ability to post comments on the blog and no one will know that you only get 20 uniques a day. Once you’re upwards of 100 RSS subscribers and/or 750 unique visitors per day, you can open up the comments and see light activity. Comments are often how tech-savvy new visitors judge the popularity of a site (and thus, its worth), so play to your strengths and keep your obscurity private.

I obviously need to remove comments from my blog as I get just a few comments per week.

Go Beyond Text in Your Posts
Blogs that contain nothing but line after line of text are more difficult to read and less consistently interesting than those that offer images, interactive elements, the occassional multimedia content and some clever charts & graphs. Even if you’re having a tough time with non-text content, think about how you can format the text using blockquotes, indentation, bulllet points, etc. to create a more visually appealing and digestable block of content.

Agreed, but still have to think of charts and multimedia elements to enhance the blog content.

    Reveal as Much as Possible
The blogosphere is in love with the idea of an open source world on the web. Sharing vast stores of what might ordinarily be considered private information is the rule, rather than the exception. If you can offer content that’s usually private – trade secrets, pricing, contract issues, and even the occassional harmless rumor, your blog can benefit. Make a decision about what’s off-limits and how far you can go and then push right up to that limit in order to see the best possible effects. Your community will reward you with links and traffic.

For this one to work, you need to be a PERSONALITY with the established name and good experience in your niche so that others would find it interesting to spend (or waste) time on your website.

Summary: I always bookmark this type of articles, and then I assign some time to analyze them and make notes – what should I test with my online projects.

There was another collection of great posts on this topic published recently – How to Attract Links and Increase Web Traffic – The Ultimate Guide – you should definitely explore the links.
