    Call center jobs
       May 24th, 2006

Call center job is a good fit for work from home.

Let’s start with the definition of the job and its scope. A call center is a centralized office used for the purpose of receiving and transmitting a large volume of requests by telephone. A few years back it was common to outsource call centers to India and Phillipines. At this time we observe a new trend: hiring independent contractors to run call-centers from homes (thanks to the fast progress of telecommunications systems: IP telephony, etc).

Why do companies outsource call centers? The answer is simple: to cut their costs. Independent contractors do not require office space, no working place, no office equipment costs. Added to that, contractors should individually handle tax filings and insurance.

Call centers are often subject to criticism (you should be ready to deal with this sort of complaints) for:

    From Callers:
o operators working from a script.
    o non-expert operators (call screening).
o overseas location, with language and accent problems.
    o automated queuing systems.

    From Staff:
    o close scrutiny by management.
    o low pay.
    o restrictive working practices.
    o high stress

Below comes the list of the companies that plan to hire many contractors for their outsourced call-centers:

    - Willow CSN, Miramar, Fla., at www.GoWillow.com, (plan – 7,000 new agents this year).
    - West Corp., Omaha, Neb., to hire more call center staff thru www.workathomeagent.com.
    - Working Solutions, Plano, Texas, accepts applications at www.workingsolutions.com.
    - LiveOps, Palo Alto, Calif., (plan – 8,000 new agents this year) thru www.liveops.com.

Some companies hire new agents as employees providing benefits. A few to list:

    - Alpine Access, Golden, Colo., at www.alpineaccess.com, (plan – 6,000 – 8,000 new agents this year).
    - ARO Outsourcing, Kansas City, Mo., at www.callcenteroptions.com, (plan – 200 new agents this year).
    - VIPdesk, Alexandria, Va., at www.vipdesk.com (plan – 350 – 400 new agents this year).
    - O’Currance Inc., Salt Lake City, (plan – 600 new agents this year) thru www.ocurrance.com.
    - IntelliCare Inc., Portland, Maine, (plan – to hire licensed nurses in a few of states) thru www.intellicare.com.

Demand (as is the case with all types of legitimate home based work) greatly exceeds supply, but it should not stop people who are really eager to earn living staying at home.
Certainly, there are more companies that hire independent contractors for their call centers, but the above list is a good place to start your search.

Three types of home based jobs
       May 23rd, 2006

While I try to cover miscellaneous home jobs I made up my mind to provide a more systematic approach to our posts. What kind of home job categories is out there? I could count three despite of my hard efforts to count more all jobs I could think about would fall into one of three categories I could define:

    1. Freelance: contracted work (outsourcing). You find a short term (as a rule) job provided by some outside employer who pays some fixed amount (or fixed hourly rate) for your services.

Samples: web design, data entry, transcription, translation, forum posting, link building, blog writing, etc.

    2. Telecommuting: long term job for some employer. The only difference from a traditional job is that you work from your home, probably with occasional visits to the company office.

Samples: any job you can do from home and office.

    3. Home based job: your own business. You sell your service or products for yourself. As you do it from your home most home based businesses are in this way or another PC focused.

Samples: eBay business, drop ship stores, affiliate marketing (i.e. dropshiparea.com), crafts, photography, etc.

Certainly, you can combine all three types in your work (as I try to do with dropshiparea.com) to maximize and diversify your revenue streams.

Telecommuting grows large in the US
       May 21st, 2006

Telecommuting grows large in the USYou want to become a telecommuter, but you still hesitate. Well, I have got good news for you. You are not alone! I mean a lot of people have already made their mind to join the army of those who has an office job but work from home. It is not an advertisement, it is statistics.

In a word, the tendency is growing and the competition is getting pretty cutthroat. The figures talk for themselves: those who prefer flextime amount to 20 million throughout America and there is another 10 million who are independent contractors.

It has been established that Americans are hopeful about the benefits that telecommute jobs can bring about, the top three of which being

    - a greater future income,
    - more flexible working hours
    - and juste milieu between work and family, when they feel they are not strangers to their own family after they return from work in the evening.

The report published by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reads that at least one in six Americans telecommute once a week. As much as 70 per cent work for companies and the rest claim to be self-employed.

The data included in the statistics is hard to analyze, because a great share of those polled combine telecommuting with a part-time or freelance job. People begin to use every arising opportunity to earn an extra income.

Among other brand names that can brag about attracting impressive workforce are Avon and Amway that account for 17 million of employees. The reason they are so popular is that they have a well-thought and proved practice of selling and customer service. If you want some additional cash you just need to join and adopt this scheme. No need to invent a bicycle or a PC, just walk the treaded path and collect the harvest. Well, why not if you want.
