Three types of home based jobs
       May 23rd, 2006

While I try to cover miscellaneous home jobs I made up my mind to provide a more systematic approach to our posts. What kind of home job categories is out there? I could count three despite of my hard efforts to count more all jobs I could think about would fall into one of three categories I could define:

    1. Freelance: contracted work (outsourcing). You find a short term (as a rule) job provided by some outside employer who pays some fixed amount (or fixed hourly rate) for your services.

Samples: web design, data entry, transcription, translation, forum posting, link building, blog writing, etc.

    2. Telecommuting: long term job for some employer. The only difference from a traditional job is that you work from your home, probably with occasional visits to the company office.

Samples: any job you can do from home and office.

    3. Home based job: your own business. You sell your service or products for yourself. As you do it from your home most home based businesses are in this way or another PC focused.

Samples: eBay business, drop ship stores, affiliate marketing (i.e. dropshiparea.com), crafts, photography, etc.

Certainly, you can combine all three types in your work (as I try to do with dropshiparea.com) to maximize and diversify your revenue streams.

    Job Sites: SimplyHired.com
       May 19th, 2006

In our attempt to build an exhaustive list of resources to explore in search of a home based job today we review SimplyHired.com  – Job Search Made Simple. It is a comparatively new service (started back in 2005) compared to its well known competitors on the market of job sites.

SimplyHired has millions of jobs from thousands of job boards, classifieds, and company sites. The database is the heart of the service – the company claims they list more jobs than any other similar service. SimplyHired can become your one stop destination in your long search of places to secure a home job – no need to browse hundreds of job sites checking their listings of home jobs. Also using one interface you save time on getting rid of duplicate postings that are often listed on numerous sites.

You can browse the jobs by locations, industries and occupations. But the feature that is of more value and interest to us is ‘Advanced Search’ as we would like to make a targeted search of available home, freelance and that kind of jobs.

You can create a free account to keep track of your job search, save jobs, research salary, subscribe to the option to get job notices by e-mail, etc.

My search of freelance jobs returned 5276 matches. Who is wanted?

    -    Freelance Photographers,
    -    Freelance Writers,
    -    Freelance Editors,
    -    Freelance Developers,
    -    Freelance Designers,
    -    Freelance Proofreading,
    -    Freelance Publicists,
    -    Freelance Illustrators,
    -    Freelance Copywriters,
    -    Freelance Bookkeepers,
    -    Freelance Technicians,
    -    Freelance Art Buyers,
    -    Freelance Video Journalists,
    -    Freelance Interactive Media Planners,
    -    Freelance Media Research Supervisors,
    -    Freelance Makeup Artists,
    -    Freelance Research Managers,
    -    Freelance Dv Camera Operators,
    -    etc, etc, etc…

Do the companies outsource all work now? I could not imagine some of the above could be outsourced.

My search of home jobs returned 171297 matches. But many returned results are irrelevant (from our point of view as we are interested in ‘home based job’). For instance, Home Depot Inc. has 5932 positions that are listed as ‘home jobs’.

Your solution? Either browse through these numerous irrelevant results searching for the opportunities you need or refine your search. As soon as I changed the keyword phrase to ‘home based job’ results went down to 36622 matches and I have got more relevant listings.

    Summary
SimplyHired.com is a huge job market that definitely deserves to be on your list. You can research many opportunities using one website, keep track and arrange the job search process properly. ‘Search’ function and other extra options (i.e., you see the job site the position was originally posted on; you also see the age of each job listing) make it a real pleasure to work with the service.

    Four step guide to blogging
       May 18th, 2006

Blogging is a popular way to generate income working at home. The essence of this business model: select a topic, write about it, cover it properly and collect advertising dollars.

As with any other business it takes time to learn and improve your skills in blogging, but it can be very rewarding. In this post I will cover the steps required to start and grow your blogging business.

    1. Niche or topic selection. What are you going to write about? Here you should keep in mind both parties: yourself (you should be familiar with the topic) and the readers (they should find something in your blog, otherwise they will not read it). This should help you with your topic research:

    • Alexa Top 100
    • Google Answers: see what people pay for
    • AssociatePrograms.com: check new programs
    • Check stats at http://www.clickz.com/stats/
    • Websites for sale: topics, traffic & revenue details
    • WordTracker.com reports: what people search
    • Check forum sections: need services/ will buy
    • eBay.com What’s Hot
    • Shopping.com consumer demand index; MySimon top searches (1000)
    • 7Search.com top paying keywords
    • Investigate affiliate networks
    • Study high paying keyword lists
    • Amazon: hot selling books (topics) and products
    • ClickBank.com: subscribe to Affiliate Alert
    • Find niche forums: explore FAQ, user’s signatures in posts
    • Yahoo! Buzz Index, AOL Search: hot searches monthly, Lycos hot 50
    • Google Zeitgeist
    • Picks.yahoo.com/picks
    • Del.icio.us (most popular tags), Slashdot.com, Digg.com: angles/ buzz/ trends
    • Blog Buzz Index (search for stories rapidly propagating through blogs): www.technorati.com/pop/news/, www.blogpulse.com/trends.html
    • Feedtser top 500: www.top500.feedster.com/
    • Bloglines.com

    2. Get a cheap domain name and hosting for your blog.

    • I would recommend to check www.godaddy.com and www.moniker.com to acquire a domain name and hosting
    • Mosr popular and free blogging software: WordPress, MovableType, Blogger.com, TypePad, bBlog, Nucleus

    3. Blog promotion – the hardest part. You need to build a stream of traffic to your blog that will help earn your adv dollars. Your blog is new so do not expect much free traffic from the top search engine – Google (due to its ‘sandbox’ effect). You should focus on other traffic techniques. Hopefully this will help:

    • PPC (pay-per-click search engines)
    • Del.icio.us & other social networking websites – add your blog posts weekly
    • Much good content
    • Many quality links
    • Viral marketing
    • Press releases. Find angles monthly.
    • Tests for $ (buy links; sites; expired domains; directory listings)
    • e-Mail marketing
    • Adv in e-zines
    • Focus on getting FREE traffic from Yahoo!, MSN, other SE
    • Return, loyal visitors: give a number of reasons to come back
    • Adv at the related forums (where it is allowed): in your signature – the link to your blog
    • Banner adv
    • Classifieds (incl. Craigslist).
    • Award sites in your niche (top 100 sites, top 10 sites, etc)
    • Mega traffic mega quick: try to get your posts featured on the 1st page of www.bored.com, www.digg.com, www.slashdot.org, www.shoutwire.com, www.ebaumsworld.com, www.fark.com)
    • Alexa top 100 most trafficked sites: need to discover ways to get your tiny traffic stream from them:

    • eBay (sig, ‘about me’)
    • Flickr: submit best images with the description & a link to your blog
    • YouTube (see above)
    • Wikipedia
    • MySpace (friends generation, bulletins)

    4. Monetization. What are the ways to collect money for all your efforts? It depends on the topic, but some combination of the below methods is a good approach:

    • CPC – cost per click (top players: Adsense, Yahoo! Publisher Network, Chitika)
    • CPA – cost per action (top players: Commision Junction, LinkShare, Shareasale, ClickBank)
    • CPM – cost per impression (top players: TribalFusion, Casale, FastClick, BurstMedia)
    • Link sales (top players: AdBrite, linkworth.com, linkadage.com, textlinkbrokers.com, text-link-ads.com)

    5. An extra step (bonus): best resources that properly cover all described steps and help to be current on the development of blogosphere:

    Problogger.net
    Performancing.com

Just research each step and make blogging model a nice income generation business to enjoy.
